(3x10 ^ 8 m / s) / 2.42

It is quite simple.
Refractive index of a medium can be expressed as the ratio of the speed of light in the air at the speed of light in a specific environment
mathematically
RI = VA / VM
Take the default value of the velocity of light in the air 3 * 10 ^ 8 m / s
where 2.42 = (3 * 10 ^ 8) / speed of light in the diamond.
the speed of light in diamond = (3 * 10 ^ 8) / 2.42 = 1.24 * 10 ^ 8
which is about two and a half times less than the speed of light in the air.
Thus, we conclude that the light of two and a half times slower in the diamond compared to air travel.
